When Libraries Get Social: How tech-savvy teens are shaping library culture

The question of whether or not libraries should have a presence on social networking sites has sparked some recent debate in the library blogosphere. Why is there so much momentum to consider MySpace as a viable place to engage with teens despite its commercial nature? Beyond social networking websites, what can we expect in terms of larger sea changes in the way young people learn and communicate with libraries? Recent research looking at teens’ online behaviors and communications choices demonstrates that social networking activity is just one element of a larger shift towards greater engagement with participatory media.
